Here Are Six Career Tips for Students Who Want to Work in Journalism
Here Are Six Career Tips for Students Who Want to Work in Journalism If youre a journalism student or even just a college student whos thinking about a career in the news business, chances are youve encountered a lot of confusing and contradictory advice about what you should do in school to prepare. Should you get a journalism degree? What about communications? How do you get practical experience? And so on. As someone whos worked in journalism and been a journalism professor for 15 years I get these questions all the time. So here are my top six tips. 1. Dont major in communications: If you want to work in the news business, do not, I repeat, do not get a degree in communications. Why not? Because communications degrees are so broad editors dont know what to make of them. If you want to work in journalism, get a journalism degree. Unfortunately, many j-schools have been subsumed into communications programs, to the point where some universities dont even offer journalism degrees anymore. If thats the case at your school, move on to tip no. 2. 2. You absolutely dont have to get a journalism degree: Heres where I contradict myself. Is a journalism degree a great idea if you want to be a journalist? Absolutely. Is it absolutely necessary? No. Some of the best journalists around never went to j-school. But if you decide not to get a journalism degree its even more important that you get loads and loads of work experience. And even if you dont get the degree, I would definitely recommend taking some journalism classes. 3. Get work experience everywhere you can: As a student, getting work experience is sort of like throwing lots of spaghetti at the wall until something sticks. My point is, work everywhere you can. Write for the student newspaper. Freelance for local weekly papers. Start your own citizen journalism blog where you cover local news events. The point is, get as much work experience as you can because that, in the end, will be what lands you your first job. 4. Dont worry about going to a prestigious j school. A lot of people worry that if they dont go to one of the top journalism schools, they wont have a good head start for a career in news. Thats nonsense. I happen to know a guy whos president of one of the network news divisions, about as important a job as you can get in this field. Did he go to Columbia, Northwestern or UC Berkeley? No, he went to Temple University in Philadelphia, which has a good journalism program but one that probably isnt on any top 10 lists. Your college career is what you make of it, which means doing well in your classes and getting lots of work experience. In the end, the name of the school on your degree wont matter much. 5. Seek out professors with real-world experience: Unfortunately, the trend in university journalism programs the last 20 years or so has been to hire faculty who have PhDs in front of their names. Some of these people have also worked as journalists, but many have not. The result is that many journalism schools are staffed with professors whove probably never seen the inside of a newsroom. So when youre signing up for your classes - especially practical journalism skills courses - check the faculty bios on your programs website and make sure to pick the profs whove actually been there and done that. 6. Get the tech training, but dont neglect the fundamentals: There is a lot of emphasis on technical training in journalism programs these days, and its a good idea to pick up those skills. But remember, youre training to be a journalist, not a tech geek. The most important thing to learn in college is how to write and report. Skills in things like digital video, layout and photography can be picked up along the way.

Analysing People Oriented Methodology And Its Ethics Philosophy Essay
Analysing People Oriented Methodology And Its Ethics Philosophy Essay People oriented methodology is mainly focused on obtaining the ethical position of every individual. It emphasizes more on ethics which is a participative approach of human or people who might be the stakeholders or users. It also highlightââ¬â¢s that users are deeply involved in the development process and take control over the stages, it means that the users are also involved in the decision making process and fully committed to the IS development. People oriented methodology can be applied to a system which really involves various types of people. It is normally a difficult task of making the users getting involved in to the development stages, but still the involvement of users from the top level management to the staff level is required in order to avoid some thoughts of the user like, feeling that the job should be more demanding and less secure. On the other hand user involvement may also be used to improvise the human-computer interface. Using this sort of an approach als o includes visibility, simplicity, consistency and flexibility. It is also one to the suitable methodology in the life cycle where its aim is to involve users in the development system; its focus is on ethics, socio technical view and human implementation; in the feasibility phase it identifies current problem, opportunity, system boundaries, existing system, key objectives and task. In the analysis phase diagnosis of efficiency, job satisfaction need and analysis, specifying and weighting efficiency is done. People-oriented methodology focuses on organizational design of new system, technical options and preparation of a detailed work design. In the implementation phase, the implementing process is planned in detail it also checks for whatever it is required to make a smooth changeover and finally in the maintenance phase the system is checked in order to make sure the objective is attained, If not the correction action is taken once again ETHICS As it is told already people-orient ed methodology mainly focuses on ethics. Ethics is a branch of philosophy which seeks to address questions about morality that is concepts such as good and bad, wrong and right, justice and virtue. On the hand it can also be defined as a moral philosophy involving systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior which is required for an organization. According to Enid Mumford (see Mumford, 1995), ethics is a methodology based on the participative approach to information systems development. Ethics is different from most of the system development methodologies. In ethics the process of change is viewed with the perspective of organizational issue and not as a technical issue. Ethical Theories Ethical theories play an important role in optimizing ordinary moral functions and to establish or defend basic moral principles. Why Ethical Theories? The need for this is that the emergence of new practices in the business and the basic principles may not be enou gh for the arising problems and may not cover the new areas that are still uncovered. Therefore it is necessary for a rational and consistent theory to evaluate the morality of actions. There are two possible approaches in order to overcome these problems, firstly there are some general rules and approaches but they may not be enough for some sort of issues. There might be some situation where the generally accepted practice or rules may be challenged. In such cases if there is some ways to decide and proceed on which, rule to follow it would be grateful. The ethical theories help an individual or an organization in choosing the right rule.

Distill information about culture and cultural diferences from three Assignment
Distill information about culture and cultural diferences from three interiors - Assignment Example A close examination of the photographs reveals that the interior number 1 belongs to an elderly British couple living in the country side, interior number 2 is inhabited by a few families of different ethnicities and interior 3 is a guest house with no permanent residents. Let us now examine the interiors in more detail. Interior 1: The living room exudes a sense of deep and profound calmness. The heavy wooden furniture, the thick mat on the floor and the heavy scenery convey an idea of stability and eternity. The glass windows, most of them open, give the impression of a friendly host. The books in the study are arranged neatly and maintained clean. The inhabitants are clearly very fond of books. The ladder seems to be used quite often indicating that the inhabitants are in the habit of reading regularly. The bedroom and the bedside table again show a conservative style, typical of old British homes. The kitchen and dining area are also spick and span and tastefully decorated. Nature, birds and dogs are the favorite themes in the paintings on the walls. The paintings in the office room and the latest finished painting on the easel indicate that the person living in the house is a professional painter. The house is surrounded by lush greenery and it is obvious that the house is located in the countr yside. The elderly couple seem to be alone, but happy and contented. To maintain such a big house, they must have many servants and so it can be deduced that they are very rich. The overall impression that we get is that of an elderly couple belonging to the elite class, with lots of money and time to spare, living a peaceful life away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is noteworthy that there are no signs of modern technology like telephone, mobile or TV; may be they are purposely hidden from view. It may be noted that the kitchen is having modern facilities like cooking range etc. Interior 2: The first picture

Problems and Issues at OzBank Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Problems and Issues at OzBank - Essay Example From this discussion it is clear that OzBank has also shown an under-performance in the previous two financial years. For the past two decades, for example, the UK retail banks have felt the competitive pressures, leading banks to consolidate their positions; mergers and adoption of technology completed, and rising consumer demands with the objective of improving services. These efforts, however, failed to satisfy customers.à ¹ OzBank is not alone concerning these issues. these are: focusing on customer service, streamlining processes, reducing jobs and developing the employeesà ´ skills. These measures are backed up by management, CEO, Paul Kelly. OzBank is committing around $1200 million in several key areas, such as: staff training, systems upgrades, process simplification, and new and improved technology. This paper highlights that one of the problems that OzBank has is that out of 40,000 full time staff, it is to reduce approximately 4,000 between January 2007 and January 2009. Almost half of the reduction has already taken place. This is part of the cost-reduction strategy. Ozbank had already reduced approximately 1500 jobs in the 2006-2007 financial year and 600 employees were retrenched in July 2007. The 4000 job loses is part of the scheme to cut $600 million in costs. The first reduction strategy is the personnel versus equipment/overhead. ConMan is a management consulting company with outstanding results on staff and customers that has been hired to help with the restructure of OzBank. ConMan had advised the bank beforehand of the new strategyà ´s announcement however, they neglected to talk to the staff during this time. This may have been seen by the personnel and the union as intruders arriving into the workplace and making decisions about employees, making decisions of whe re the employee will end up, and making decisions without the inclusion in the decision-making process. Ms. Alex Faulkner, OzBank director of Human Resources claimed that the staff had been abreast of the restructuring strategy.

haile selassie Essay -- essays research papers
Haile Selassie à à à à à Haile Selassie who was believed to be a descendant from the line of David by Solomon, was a symbol to the black man. He exhibited that the black man had the capacity to be strong. This image that Selassie provided, was contrary to what blacks saw in Ethiopia, despite, Ethiopia being a black nation that had been independent for thousands of years. As a result of his assumed decadency and what he embodied, both Ethiopianââ¬â¢s and Jamaicanââ¬â¢s assigned him as their savior. Within ââ¬Å"Classic Black Nationalism: From the American Revolution to Marcus Garveyâ⬠, Young illustrates how Selassie was able to transcend form Africa to Jamaica proving that he is the black Messiah. à à à à à On November 2, 1930, Ras Tafari, at the age of thirty-seven, was crowned Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah. Men Are Better Leaders Essay
Women in high-level leadership positions, such as corporate CEOs, when studied, seem to exhibit the same sorts of leadership behaviors as their male counterparts. That is probably because the demands of the leadership role require certain actions and behaviors to succeed. In addition, because of the hurdles that women must leap to get to the top (leadership and gender expert, Alice Eagly, refers to this as the ââ¬Å"labyrinthâ⬠that women, but not men, need to go through), it could be the case that only women who exhibit the same sorts of leadership styles and behaviors as male leaders make it through. So, studying leaders at the top, gives the impression that there are no big differences in how men and women lead. You get a somewhat different picture if you ask followers and leaders about male and female leaders. They notice differences that are in line with stereotypes about men and women, reporting that female leaders are more nurturing, empathic, and responsive than male leaders, but they will also report the negative side (e. g. , moody). Male leaders, on the other hand, are perceived to be more action-oriented and more focused on tasks. As a Catalyst study concludes that according to leaders and followers in the workplace, ââ¬Å"women leaders take care, men leaders take charge. â⬠Realize, however, that this involves peopleââ¬â¢s perceptions of leaders, colored by stereotypes and expectations. Finally, there is a growing body of research that has studied the leadership styles and leadership ââ¬Å"potentialâ⬠of men and women, typically men and women managers (but also women in non-managerial positions). For example, using the theory of transformational leadership as an indicator of successful leadership (transformational leaders are inspirational, positive role models, concerned about followers, empowering, and push followers to be creative and take chances), research shows that women, as a group, have more transformational qualities than men. In other words, and based on this research, women have more leadership potential and tend to lead more effectively than men (I discussed this in an earlier post). So, what are the implications? Well, as attitudes about women leaders change (they are changing, albeit ever so slowly) and the ââ¬Å"labyrinthâ⬠becomes less difficult to navigate, we expect more to women attain high-level leadership positions. Noted leadership scholar, Bernard Bass, predicted that by the year 2034 the majority of high-level leaders will be women, based on their more transformational qualities. Of course, men in leadership positions are also realizing that the old way of leading ââ¬â taking charge (command and control) ââ¬â may not be as effective in todayââ¬â¢s world and in the future, so they learn to adapt and change how they lead.
